Do you have a few years of experience in GIS and an interest in the water and environment sector, and would be keen to learn more about hydraulics and hydraulic modelling? Do you have an interest in finding creative ways to use GIS tools and analysis to understand and help solve complex environmental and engineering problems? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as a Geospatial Specialist.

What you'll do

Our specialist team is responsible for the delivery of water treatment, wastewater, and network projects across our region.

As a Geospatial Specialist, your responsibilities will include:

Smart Geodata tool development and data analysis:

  • management of key datasets for business use
  • ArcPy/SQL/PowerBi tool creation.

Construction and management of Geodatabases for:

  • automated environment risk options screening/assessment
  • standardised option layout
  • training and development of staff in GIS processes
  • partnership working engagement; including surface water/SuDS/environment opportunity and risk.

Further opportunities to get involved with hydraulic modelling using INFOWORKS ICM, such as:

  • building and verifying integrated catchment models
  • using river quality modelling and survey results to assess the impact of discharges from combined sewer overflows (CSOs)
  • developing outline solutions to resolve hydraulic problems, using both sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and more traditional ‘hard-engineering' approaches.

The role will require engagement with other departments to ensure we identify and maximise potential synergies with existing projects and the available data sources and integration with existing data platforms.

This will mostly be an office/home-based role, but occasional fieldwork can be included, if desired and where appropriate.

What you'll need

To be successful in the role, you will:

  • have a relevant degree
  • have excellent IT and communication skills
  • have good data management, listening, and interpretation skills with an appreciation of technical objectives
  • have the ability to communicate technical information to all levels using GIS-based outputs
  • have experience with Microsoft Office suite of programs
  • be comfortable working on your own or as part of a team
  • be comfortable managing your time to ensure deadlines are met
  • have an understanding of conservation and other environmental legislation, but this is not essential.

Experience using ArcGIS Pro/GIS packages is essential.

Using programming languages, such as R or Python would be very beneficial but not essential.

All other relevant training required will be provided.

We are looking for a highly organised individual who has excellent attention to detail and accuracy. You will be self-motivated, use your own initiative, and successfully work under moderate supervision, as well as communicating confidently with other team members and colleagues throughout the company. There may be a future opportunity for line management as the new business structure and associated needs develop.

What you'll receive

  • Total pension contributions up to 20%.
  • Career progression and professional development opportunities.
  • 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
  • The opportunity to buy up to ten days' holiday and sell up to five every year.
  • A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
  • Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
  • A new electric car in exchange for part of your gross salary, subject to conditions.
  • Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
  • One paid volunteering day each year.
  • Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
  • An interactive health and wellbeing platform.
  • Support from mental health first aiders.
  • A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone to work for us.
