Hutan Synergy is focused on addressing climate change, biodiversity crises, and inequality through high-integrity voluntary carbon credit projects. Hutan Synergy leads the sales and marketing for a pipeline of forestry carbon projects in Southeast Asia.
To complement our team, we are seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to serve as GIS/Carbon Specialist.
The candidate will be responsible for conducting GIS tasks and developing and monitoring AFOLU carbon projects under international standards. The candidate will provide technical and project-based support to ensure successful delivery of projects from origination to implementation.
Lead technical analyses related to Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) project opportunities, project design, and development, focusing mainly on AFOLU carbon projects (e.g., REDD, IFM, ARR, biochar, etc.).
Perform analyses including remote sensing tasks, biomass assessment (AGB and BGB) in peat and mangroves, peat depth modeling, hydrology modeling, carbon emission reduction/removal estimations.
Ensure technical excellence and innovation, in compliance with international (e.g., Verra VCS-CCBS, Gold Standard) and national standards.
Support Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for climate components across all project phases, ensuring up-to-date practices and regulatory compliance.
Lead technical reviews of external partners or subcontractors regarding climate-related work.
Lead GIS-RS analyses of satellite data and develop spatial solutions for GIS-RS components to support project evaluation, development, and MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification).
Tasks include geo-referencing, calibration, image processing and analysis, feature extraction, land use/land cover analysis, change detection, and spatial modeling.
Provide expert support and recommendations for implementing GIS-RS best practices across the project lifecycle, ensuring methods are efficient, updated, and aligned with goals and standards.
Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Remote Sensing/GIS, Forestry, Environmental Science, or related field; Master’s Degree preferred.
At least 5 years of professional experience in GIS and Remote Sensing in forestry or environmental science.
Knowledge and prior experience with AFOLU project development under Verra, Gold Standard, or similar standards.
Strong knowledge of forest mapping and monitoring, especially REDD+ and ARR using GIS.
Proficient with GIS and remote sensing software (QGIS, ArcGIS, ERDAS, ENVI, Global Mapper, etc.).
Experience working with cross-functional teams, managing complex projects, and delivering results.
Strong analytical and technical writing skills with attention to detail.
Professional experience in project management and reporting.
Professional fluency in English is required; fluency in Bahasa is a plus.
Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
